October is Beautiful

It’s winter here in Boston. Even though it’s still October, I declare it winter because my cat Mr. Puck is full of static electricity. When it’s cold enough that the cat shoots sparks, that’s winter.

Did you know that as a grown-up, you don’t have to go from door to door asking for candy? You can buy it right from the store, any kind you want!!! Aral and I went a little crazy on the candy thing – she bought “fun size” Milky Ways, Reese’s bars, Twix and Baby Ruth’s. I bought “fun size” Peppermint Patties, 3 Musketeers, Reese’s bites, and Almond Joys. Due to the “fun size” of the treats, we can swap and mix all the candies in a bowl and it’s just like we went trick-or-treating days early. And we don’t even have to sort through all the cheap suckers and weird stuff to get to the good stuff. It’s all of the cavities and sugar highs with none of the bothersome effort of actually walking around.

Life is good.

I started two new classes at library school last week, Appraisal and Basic Materials Repair. Both classes are a lot of fun, and when I started both it was nice to be in the company of other students who can’t believe we’re 40 days away from finishing the master’s program. In 40 days I will have my degree. This week I had my resume gone over again at the career center at school, and since Friday I have applied for one job a day, my goal until I have a full time professional position. I’m trying not to freak out about the job thing, but the excess sugar from all those candy bars isn’t helping me accomplish this goal.

Also, I’ve gone back to drinking coffee in the morning again, after 15 months of being “clean” from the morning coffee habit. Well, maybe I’ll be able to kick coffee again after I graduate. Perhaps coffee addiction is just one of those things I need to lean on in order to get a degree. I certainly drank my weight in beans before escaping my final year at MTSU.

My sister Sara is coming to visit me in December, yay! She’s 14 and Boston won’t entirely blow her mind, as she’s been to NYC before. But hopefully the tour of the theater district and a few colleges will inspire her. She’s been having typical 14-year-old girl problems this year, and she needs to find a goal, a center, something to focus on in her life. I hope I can help a little – everyone’s got to make their own way through adolescence, but at least I can give her a sneak peak at how fabulous things are on the other side of High School. Plus, I’m just looking forward to spending some time with her.
