The daemon internet
Well, that's it; I'm officially dependant on the internet.
Tonight I installed a web service onto my computer that costs $20 a month and came, believe it or not, on my Fiona Apple CD. I've always been against paying for the internet - it's free at school, work, and the library! Why would I pay for something I can readily get for free? I've always used computers in the library to write this page, to check my e-mail, and to read my morning comic page. The computer in my room was only for Microsoft Office back when I lived in Tennessee, and I expected it to be ever so. But then last Christmas my boyfriend hooked my computer in my room up to the net using a free dial-up server at his old college.
The service crashed every other week, but I got hooked to surfing in my jammies. And so I sit here writing from home now, PAYING for the internet. Can you believe it? I can't. But I have so much research to do for grad school, let's blame it on that.
Anyway, it's been an Elizabeth-pays-for-things-that-she-only-sort-of-needs week anyway. I finally joined the American Library Association and the Society for American Archivists this week. I had put it off because of the fees, but I needed to join because my entire profession is very clubby about these sort of things. Besides, the ALA is super-cool. They fight censorship everywhere, and run "banned books" week. I'm all about banned books. I think everyone should read Weetzie Bat and Catcher in the Rye and Huckleberry Finn and Dr. Seuss all they can. The Archival Society is not quite as hip, not having so many things to fight for, but I think they may be secretly cool. I would certainly appreciate it if they help me find a job in January. I am also under the suspicion that they might secretly rule the world. Only, not in a League of Doom kind of way. More in an archival kind of way. Holders of musty forgotten sacred texts, and all that ;).
This week is looking a lot better than last week was. I turned in two major projects today, and tomorrow I'll start a big research paper I hope to have done by late Friday night or early Saturday morning, so i can spend the rest of the weekend playing with Ryan. Then I just have three more big things to get done in the two and a half weeks left in the semester. Aren't you glad you aren't trying to get a master's degree? Can you believe I pay people to give me this kind of work load?
Well, you probably believe I'll pay for anything - I paid for the internet.
Oh - I also paid to get on classmates.com. How lame is that? Well, I did it for the information, which was highly useful. I used it to track down a missing cousin from another state, a college room mate, and oh yeah, a few people I actually went to high school with. It is a pretty good directory, once you get over the highway robbery at the door. But at least it's only a one time fee.
I have Friday off! And the Boston Marathon is coming! And it was nice and warm today, the first day I was able to walk around without a coat in ages. Life is good.
But more money to cover all this stuff would be nice!
